Jackson Sutton
Texas based Artist with a mission to spread peace through art and diversity. Unapologetically Autistic.
Jackson’s Artist Statement: My name is Jackson Sutton, and I am from Austin, TX, USA. I’m part of the autism spectrum and I have loved making art since I was very little. Many of my earliest memories revolved around me making art; using pencils, pens, markers, crayons, chalk, finger paints, Play-Doh etc. I’ve had a predominantly cartoon style of art since childhood but eventually sometime around 4th grade, I had developed a signature style of art that embodied Latin American folk art with Japanese animanga art and Western cartoon art. Later on, I came to discover that much of my style of Latin Art was also evident in Eastern European and Indian folk art, and I came to include that too. I still want to become an animator, an author and illustrator, a set and costume designer sometime soon.
About the Artist
Diagnosed with autism at age 4, Jackson began drawing obsessively at 16 months old. He composed his first song at age 3 and was consumed with interests that seemed otherworldly for a small child: languages, mythology, art, music, and the natural world. Once he could communicate verbally at age 5, he was able to tell us how he was experiencing what most of us call reality: a wonderful place of beauty that he named Jackson’s EyeTV, that he alone could see inside his mind.
Pulling from this seemingly inexhaustible source of creativity, Jackson makes art, writes poems and books, composes music, draws anime cartoons, constructs other universes with intact cultures and invents languages drawn from the study of hundreds of real languages that he teaches himself online.
Jackson thinks it is important that people know about his brain and about his autism. He says, “The autistic brain is very strong. It has many different tastes and appetites (interests).”
When asked if he knew what uplifting meant, Jackson said:
“Yeah, to raise your soul up!”
Jackson’s art practice aims to be uplifting, mind opening and soul raising!
