Please join our family this Sunday, February 11, in supporting Jackson in his quest to be a “big artist” with his FIRST GROUP SHOW at the Austin Public Library Yarborough Branch from 3 to 5 p.m. Drop in anytime during this window to meet the artists, view the work and grab a snack. The event is free and open to the public.
The show is modest in scope, just seven artists with five works apiece, but it’s large in spirit. The spirit of inclusion permeates this show hosted and organized by the Austin Public Library Yarborough Branch in Austin, Texas. One of the goals of the show is to not only show off the talents of people in our community with autism but also to encourage people with developmental disabilities to see the library as a place they can access that is welcoming and interested in their needs.
A HUGE thank you to the Yarborough Branch for their forward thinking and their generous spirit of inclusion.
We are excited that the opening is happening at the Austin Public Library where people with autism are not only included but are the featured stars of the show. The event is committed to inclusion and will provide an accepting place for adults and children with autism to socialize and be out in the community at an event that takes their needs into account.
The art opening reception will be held in the main conference room of the Yarborough branch. If the event gets too loud for people with autism, there is an entire quiet library to wander around in to calm down. Also, snacks will be provided that are gluten- and dairy-free for those in the autism community that adhere to special diets. For the attending public, there will be educational materials provided by the Autism Society of Texas and there will be a book display by the Austin Public Library featuring books about autism and autism-related information. Come learn about autism and be an advocate for inclusive settings for people with disabilities.
Let this be a time to celebrate the talents of those with differences in our community! People with autism like my son just want to hang out with people, meet new friends and show off their talents.
As Jackson says, “Come to the show, it will be great!”
Here is the Facebook event to RSVP. Hope to see you there.
