Ask any parent of a child with special needs, and most parents will say the thing that scares them the most is the day that the school bus stops coming, the day that children “opt out” of school services anywhere between the ages of 18 and 22. So, with this worry always on my mind, I couldn’t be more thrilled to see this article from the Daily Beast on “Employers are Seeking Out Autistic Workers.” Finally, employers are seeing that people with autism can have unique strengths that other people considered neurotypical may not have, like intense focus on details. It’s heartening when I think of my son graduating from high school and hoping that there will be employers who will consider him for his strengths instead of deficits.
